To determine whether the use of orthodontic retainers can prevent orthodontic treatment recurrences, as well as to point out the indications and limitations of the different types of existing retainers. The study design was a narrative literature review. The search for articles was performed digitally, in the PubMed, Bireme and Google Scholar databases. Articles published in english and portuguese in the last 5 years, available in full text, were included. The indication of orthodontic retainers is necessary to maintain the results achieved during orthodontic movement. The literature shows different retention models that have different indications, but aim at the same objective, which is to guarantee the control of relapses and crowding after the active phase of orthodontic treatments. The use of retainers in the clinical orthodontic routine is necessary as an effective measure to control relapses, and the professional should pay attention to monitoring the patient after the treatment has been completed.
