Despite being a very common anomaly, tooth agenesis is still unknown to the majority of the population. As for etiology, the authors consider genetic, systemic and environmental factors. Congenital agenesis of the maxillary lateral incisor corresponds to 20% of agenesis cases, ranking second in prevalence. Agenesis in permanent teeth can occur unilaterally or bilaterally. It is possible to observe a higher frequency in females. Early diagnosis of agenesis is essential, as it allows for the establishment of available treatment options and a shorter time, considering the greater number of treatment possibilities, in addition to preventing occlusal problems from worsening. The most recommended treatment for these types of agenesis are: closing the space or opening and maintaining the space. These options must be discussed with the patient and/or guardians during the first consultations, presenting the advantages and disadvantages of the chosen treatment and mainly the patient's expectations in relation to the final result, aiming at the patient's functional and aesthetic reestablishment, with the contribution being essential. of a multidisciplinary team such as Periodontics, Dentistry, Prosthetics and Implantology, in addition to Orthodontics.
