Titanium implants were well indicated and used for more than 40 years, due to the aesthetic compromise, it was noticed the need to look for a material that did not show the grayish color. Zirconia implants were introduced in implant dentistry as an alternative to titanium implants. Zirconia appears to be a suitable implant material due to its tooth color, mechanical properties, biocompatibility and low affinity for plaque. The best surface treatment for zirconia is still being studied. It is already known that titanium and zirconia alloys have good osseointegration and that the strength of zirconia is good, but comparatively lower than that of titanium.
