To investigate in the literature the use of miniplates in the compensatory treatment of Class III malocclusions in adult patients. Narrative literature review, by searching the articles in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar databases with the following descriptors: tooth movement techniques, orthodontic anchorage procedures and Class III malocclusion of Angle. Articles in Portuguese and English that were published in the last 10 years and that were available in full text were included. Class III malocclusions are considered challenging in orthodontic treatment because they have a strong genetic component. In this context, miniplates appear, which represent an innovation for the treatment of skeletal malocclusions as they are a partially osseointegrated system, allowing better control of forces, both in magnitude and in direction. The use of miniplates represents a less invasive and more affordable alternative when compared to orthognathic surgery, and may be indicated in skeletal cases.
