Abstract

The present study aims to review the literature on the treatment of patients with impacted or impacted canine teeth, focusing on their use through traction, an orthodontic practice that is still much discussed. Due to the significant incidence of impacted canines, with prevalence for females, the demand for treatment is also high in dental offices. In these cases, the most used therapy is orthodontic traction, which involves surgical exposure, fixation of appliances to pull the tooth into the correct position. However, successful treatment of impacted canines requires adequate planning of the case, involving a multidisciplinary team, having as a starting point the general characteristics of the patient, the evaluation and position of the tooth, the angulation and three-dimensional location of the tooth, with a view to favoring the prognosis and effectiveness of the treatment, as well as informing the patient or their guardians when they are minors, about the procedures and possibilities of results. In summary, the success of orthodontic traction is conditioned to the effectiveness of its procedures, such as diagnosis, prognosis, science and patient commitment.
