Abstract

Intraoral appliances are an alternative clinical treatment with favorable results for patients with sleep disorders, such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and primary snoring. These comorbidities are linked to narrowing or obstruction of the upper airway. The aim of this study is to review the indication of intraoral appliances, treatment, examinations and diagnoses in sleep disorders in dentistry. Intraoral devices should produce a gradual advancement of the mandible, enabling airway clearance. The correct evaluation through clinical examination, Body Mass Index, drowsiness test (Epworth), cephalometry and polysomnography, will give the coordinates, if the device is indicated for the patient. Intraoral appliances are an excellent option for the treatment of primary snoring and mild to moderate apneas, however, for severe apneas, their use is restricted, indicated only when other treatments of choice are refused.
