Abstract

To understand the applicability of orthodontic mini-implants in the correction of gingival smile, aiming to add knowledge for a clinical practice of excellence. This is a narrative literature review. Articles were searched in the following digital databases: Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar, using the following descriptors: orthodontics; dental aesthetics; orthodontic anchorage procedures; tooth movement techniques. Articles in portuguese or english, which were published in the last 10 years and available in full text, were included. There are several techniques for teeth intrusion, but they can cause side effects on other teeth, in addition to requiring greater cooperation on the part of the patient. Mini-implants are devices that can be used in dental intrusions, avoiding side effects to adjacent teeth, as they are skeletal anchorage devices, and reduce the need for patient cooperation. The intrusion of maxillary anterior teeth with mini-implants is an effective method for the correction of gummy smile and the need to improve clinical orthodontic practice should encourage the constant search by professionals to keep up to date on this technique.
