Abstract

To describe the mechanics and appliances that can be used in the treatment of Class II with mandibular retrusion in the mixed dentition, in particular activating orthopedic appliances. The chosen design was a literature review of the narrative type. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online, PubMed and Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: mixed dentition; Angle Class II malocclusion; orthopedics. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, articles in portuguese or english, published in the last 10 years, available in full text. Duplicate articles were excluded. According to the review of the literature reviewed, the most recurrent design of publications was original articles and clinical trials. It was possible to point out that functional orthopedic appliances remodel the development of the face together with masticatory muscles, in addition to promoting tooth disarticulation, enhancing mandibular growth, guiding the eruption of permanent teeth and controlling alveolar development. With regard to the indicated treatments, functional orthopedics has proven to be very effective and the results are very satisfactory. Among the techniques involving functional orthopedic appliances, the Bionator by Balters, Frankel, Herbst, Twin Block, Klammt and Andresen Activator were the examples with the highest recurrence presented in the literature and with proven results for the correction of Angle Class II malocclusion.
