To explain the rapid maxillary expansion technique in patients undergoing growth and development, in addition to the respective devices used in the treatment and their indications. The chosen design was a literature review of the narrative type. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: palatal expansion technique; malocclusion; interceptive orthodontics; orthodontic appliances. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, articles in Portuguese or English, published in the last 10 years, available in full text. Duplicate articles and monographs were excluded. It was found that the two circuit breakers presented excellent results when well indicated for both adult and pediatric patients, it is worth emphasizing the importance of a good anamnesis and planning to minimize any damage to the patient. Taking into account all research and studies, we identified that what leads to maxillary atresia is directly related to intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The correction of transverse maxillary atresia is performed through the following treatments: ERM, MARPE and ERMCA; the latter being more indicated for adult patients, where bone maturation has already been reached. What guides the professional towards good planning and treatment are the individual characteristics of the patient, such as age.
