Abstract

Periodontal and Peri-implant Diseases and Disorders, where several experts analyzed the existing scientific evidence and developed a universal classification. This study aimed to describe this new classification of periodontal and peri-implant disease. To carry out this work, a search of articles produced in "The World Workshop on the Classification of Periodontal and Peri-Implant Diseases and Conditions" was carried out. In addition, a complementary search was carried out in the PubMed and SciELO databases. The terms used were: classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases; periodontitis; peri-implantitis/classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases; periodontitis; periimplantitis. Articles published between 2018 and 2021 were selected, considering this new classification. It can be concluded that the development of a classification scheme for periodontal diseases and conditions is important for an appropriate diagnosis and treatment of patients, as well as for the study of the etiology, pathogenesis, natural history and treatment of these diseases and conditions. With regard to the field of implant dentistry, to assess the peri-implant conditions in the new classification, it is recommended that clinicians obtain radiographs and probing measurements immediately after completion of the prosthesis over implant. An additional radiograph after the loading period should be taken to establish a bone level reference after physiological remodeling.
