Currently, there has been an increase in the demand of adult patients seeking orthodontic treatment for aesthetic reasons, or by requesting other specialties, due to the possibility of improving the prognosis through an interdisciplinary approach. However, some adult patients may have periodontal impairment associated with orthodontic treatment. The present study aimed to evaluate, through a literature review, orthodontic and periodontal aspects of the treatment of adult patients with periodontal involvement. Tooth movement in these patients is not contraindicated, but it is necessary to assess the condition of the periodontium and establish an adequate treatment plan, in addition to restoring and maintaining periodontal health during orthodontic treatment, reducing the risk of adverse effects.
