Botulinum toxin: advantages and complications in dentistry

Abstract

In the aesthetics area, botulinum toxin is widely used for several types of treatment, being considered very effective. The objective of this research is to describe, through an integrative review, the advantages and intercurrences of botulinum toxin due to the importance of its use in medicine and dentistry with therapeutic and aesthetic purposes. The search was performed in the databases of LILACS, using the Descriptors in Health Sciences (DeCs) "botulinum toxin" and "facial aesthetics". We selected 10 published in Portuguese available online, published between 2009 and 2020, from where the results emerged. It was observed that the advantages are superior to the intercurrences as long as you have knowledge of facial anatomy, muscle function and pharmacology of neurotoxin. Therefore, a safe, non-invasive, accessible and effective option when applied to correct muscles bringing aesthetic and therapeutic benefits.
