Efficacy of vitamin D on the movement of patients in Orthodontics: a systematic review

The prolonged duration of orthodontic treatment is a frequent challenge in clinical practice, motivating the search for methods that accelerate tooth movement. This study aimed to analyze the influence of vitamin D on orthodontic tooth movement and understand its metabolism in the body. A systematic search was conducted in the PubMed and Elsevier databases, including meta-analyses, systematic reviews, and randomized clinical trials in humans published between 2023 and 2024. Animal studies and narrative reviews were excluded. One randomized clinical trial evaluated 29 healthy women, aged 18 to 25 years, who underwent bilateral extraction of the first upper premolar. Participants were divided into control, placebo, and experimental groups according to their vitamin D3 levels. The results showed greater initial tooth movement in the placebo group, while the experimental group showed greater movement in the second month and in the total period evaluated, with statistically significant differences compared to the control group. It is concluded that further clinical studies are needed to clarify the true impact of vitamin D on orthodontic tooth movement and associated root resorption.
