Abstract

To describe the tools facial analysis, smile analysis and Bolton analysis and their use together as a means of facilitating orthodontic diagnosis. The chosen design was a narrative literature review. The search for articles was performed digitally in the Virtual Health Library and Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: dental aesthetics, diagnosis, planning, smile and Orthodontics. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, as well as articles in Portuguese, Spanish or English, available in full text. Duplicate articles were excluded. The initial search generated 409 publications, of which only 17 were included in the review because they met the criteria previously explained. The studies highlighted that an accurate diagnosis is the foundation of a successful orthodontic treatment. By carefully analyzing the patient's face and smile and performing a Bolton analysis using a plaster model, including the patient's complaints and expectations, the orthodontist can develop a personalized and effective treatment plan. By considering the patient's needs and expectations, the orthodontist can develop a personalized treatment plan that meets their demands and results in a high degree of satisfaction. To this end, using diagnostic tools such as those explained in this paper is of utmost importance, since it facilitates decision-making and helps the orthodontist to make a more assertive diagnosis.
