To present and discuss the effects of orthodontic treatment for patients with cleft lip and palate. The chosen design was a narrative literature review. The search for articles was carried out digitally, in the Virtual Health Library, Scientific Electronic Library Online and Google Scholar databases, using the following descriptors: cleft palate; cleft lip; pathology; cleft lip. Publications related to the objectives listed in this research were included, articles in Portuguese or English, published in the last 10 years, available in full text. Duplicate articles were excluded. The initial search generated 211 publications, of which only 20 were included in the review because they met the criteria previously explained. In the work it was possible to highlight that orthodontic treatment combined with surgery presented better benefits to patients, combined with interdisciplinary action for rehabilitation. It should be noted that the orthodontic intervention protocol must be individualized and consistent, privileging procedures that have a significant impact and consequently an effect with a significant final result, bringing effects and improvements in breathing, swallowing, speech and occlusion. All of these improved the quality of life of patients, integrating them into society and providing psychosocial health for them.
