Malocclusions such as crossbite, maxillary transverse deficiency, and dental crowding affect patients of all age groups and social classes. There are various treatment modalities available for addressing these issues, but with the advancement of dentistry, new expansion techniques such as rapid maxillary expansion assisted by mini-implants (MARPE) offer advantages in terms of efficiency and biomechanical control, allowing for the application of controlled forces for maxillary expansion. The aim of this study is to conduct a comprehensive literature review on the use of the MARPE technique, reporting its main treatment aspects, clinical indications, advantages, and disadvantages. Studies provide evidence that MARPE, when compared to other expansion devices, is capable of reducing the risks of tissue injury, including dental, by avoiding posterior tooth tipping and achieving expansion solely at the bone level. Based on the studies, we conclude that MARPE is an effective treatment alternative with fewer side effects for maxillary-related malocclusions in adult patients.
